My Lenten Journey

Posted by: Ashley

As the Lenten season approached this year, I felt a strong calling to do something different. I usually pick one or two things to "give up" for 40 days as a small taste of Christ's sacrifice. Now, I've realized that I had such a superficial understanding of  Lent and the power that it offers if it's approached righteously.

This year, I intentionally began the Lenten season with a goal and a prayer - to quiet the background noise in my head and allow me to hear God's voice clearly and concisely. I wanted to reignite the fire and passion that I used to have for my faith. But most of all...I wanted to be obedient. My exercise in obedience began when I was led to participate in a 40 day fast. I joined my congregation and followed the Daniel Fast - eating only fruits, veggies and fish. I particularly avoided chemicals...and only used natural seasonings and had no dairy at all.

The first week was the hardest. There was a shift in my physical being and a test of my mental and emotional strength. I ended up going to the doctor because of major back spasms, that happened as a result of changes in my digestive system. As time went on, it got easier and I started to feel better, stronger, more level headed than ever. There were a few days here and there where I could not stick exactly to the plan, but overall I think I did well and persisted for 40 days. In addition to the fast, I followed a Lenten study guide and read the Bible nearly everyday. I prayed intensely.

I struggle a little with revealing such a personal experience with our readers but I truly do think that this season of fasting, studying and praying has built me up and restored in me something that was lost. Therefore, I wanted to offer it as an opportunity for you. Some revelations can only be revealed through fasting and prayer. A spiritual door has been opened for me and I'm excited about my friendship with God.

I've learned that Lent is about so much more than giving something up. In fact, it's not about me and my sacrifice at all. It's about Him and the ultimate sacrifice. It's about being still and humble and growing in faith.

I pray that tomorrow is a new beginning for you. If God can raise a man from the dead, he can surely raise you from any distressing situation!

Have a blessed and joyous Easter for HE IS RISEN!

  1. What a great message. And I also believe it's not all about giving something up. It's actually about GAINING more! :) With Christ we don't lose anything, we gain everything :)

Thank you for sharing such a personal story.
